With winter right around the corner, there’s no better way to warm up than grabbing a hot cup of coffee. Luckily for those living in Baltimore, there are plenty of coffee shops and cafes throughout the city. Whether you’re checking out homes for sale in Baltimore or just rented an apartment in the area, keep these coffee shops in mind next time you’re craving a hot drink.
Located in the Barclay neighborhood, Sophomore Coffee is a popular Baltimore coffee shop that prides itself on being a warm, inclusive place and using ethically-sourced products.
Podcaster Rob Lee of The Truth In This Art is a city local and a huge fan of Sophomore Coffee. His favorite item on the menu consists of Sophomore’s house blend cold brew with simple syrup and freshly grated cinnamon. “Sophomore is special because it’s run by coffee nerds Kris & Annie, who really pay attention to the details around the coffee-drinking experience,” Lee says. “From coffee research, and coffee & chocolate tastings to the design aesthetic, Sophomore gets it. I was an early adopter to Sophomore and am now an evangelist.”
Stephanie Burt, the host of The Southern Fork podcast, also recommends Sophomore Coffee, crediting the charming indoor space and constant availability.
“The owners often focus on sourcing beans from smallholder farms and then treating them well in the brewing process,” she says. “My go-to is a cortado, but if I’m in the mood to really develop my palate for new coffee nuances, I’ll go for an Americano or drip.”
The 3rd is a community coworking space that doubles as a cafe located at the Lakefront in Downtown Columbia, MD, just southwest of Baltimore. It’s the perfect place for collaboration, networking, or enjoying warm drinks or baked goods.
“The spacious yet cozy interior has a vibe that invites one to linger,” says Baltimore-area resident Jeremy Dommu of The Merriweather Post. “It features coffee and tea from local Black-owned businesses, made in-house sandwiches, salads, and soups, and a pop-up bakery called AppleCore BakeShop that has delicious treats, including sweet potato cheesecake and chocolate toffee nut bread pudding. What makes The 3rd truly unique is that it’s not just a coffee shop but a business community for women of color entrepreneurs that offers rentable office space, conference rooms, resources, and tools to help grow businesses and showcase products.”

Morning Mugs Coffee
“One of the most unique coffee shops in Baltimore is Morning Mugs Coffee in the Federal Hill neighborhood,” says Baltimore local Yelena Trepetin of the See The World, Eat The Food blog. “One of the best drinks on the menu is the S’mores Latte, a rich and decadent latte to make your morning sweeter. One of our favorite items is the Banana Chocolate Chip Muffin, a yogurt-based muffin that is soft, fluffy, and perfect, especially when served warm. We also love being greeted by the charming owner and playing the sticker game — where you have to guess the color of the sticker on your cup for a discount on your next visit.
